Not even too sure if AW used grid refernences?
As to the Trig station on Souther fell, this may not have been a column but an bench marker ( a large stud in the ground) which may now be covered by that nice cairn south west of the actual summit.

That would certainly account for it. There is such a bench marker on Branstree (there are others, I think) which AW doesn't mention so I can only assume it was put there after his visit. It would have been unlike AW to miss it, or mention it.

Frank, For what it's worth the Ordnance Survey list of Trig Stations for Landranger Sheet 90 does not make any reference to a Trig Station on Souther Fell, either as a column or buried block. But then the list does not include any points disused so Andy may be right that any point that did exist may lie under the cairn -spades and shovels next time you are up there frank.  Frank. |

Another very late reply to this thread!
Here's a nice way to include this unloved top into a route with a purpose other than simply bagging.
It provides a good way of combining Blencathra and Skiddaw in the same outing.
From Blencathra summit to Atkinson Pike, then to the Common, and down to the Skiddaw House road via Cloven Stone and the Stake. On to Skiddaw House and up to Skiddaw, perhaps via Little Man.

We loved Mungrisdale Common - walked it part of route over Souther Fell, Blencathra, Bannerdale Crags and Bowscale. We loved the solitude after the crowds on Blencathra and enjoyed the panoram around us. My sons loved the challenge of locating the summit and jumping in the bogs!

We loved the solitude after the crowds on Blencathra and enjoyed the panoram around us. My sons loved the challenge of locating the summit and jumping in the bogs! Great route from Mungrisdale village. Did you throw in Sharp Edge and Bowscale Tarn? |

My sons loved the challenge of locating the summit and jumping in the bogs! i also love Mungrisdale Common Tania, for the exact same reason!, now I'm a bit of a sad loner!!  and just love the solitude!, Ive been there on fantastic Summer days, and also in 10ft visibility, and have never bumped into anyone else at the summit, the view (when there is one) of Skiddaw is worth it for me! surely this is why AW included it in his 214! is it Mr AW? |

Simon - we didn't do Sharp Edge (I am too much of a wimp!) as I don't like Striding Edge so thought probably beyond me. One of my sosn is also a bit nervous of 'edges' and we only just got him over striding edge. My husband and other son were keen to try it out but in the end decided to leave it for another time. We also missed Bowscale Tarn so will have to leave this for our next visit - always good to have something to look forward to!
