I read in today's Times that Lowther is refusing to sign farmers' applications for subsidies. Apparently as Landowner he has to countersign. He is a convert to the Rewilding thesis that G. Monbiot has been putting forward and believes that sheep have caused an ecological desert in the Lake District. Thus, he wants fewer sheep and allow a variety of flora to flourish. Subsequently there would be a greater variety of fauna. Apparently this step would effectively put many uphill farmers out of business; one reported that he would lose £15K. This affects all upland Lowther land including eg,Loughrigg, National Trust leased land in Langdales.
