Dave,

I recently bought a Western Digital Passport 250gb external hard drive from Comet in Kendal, a bit more costly than Amazon but I didn't have to wait in to receive it ! But before that I had a look in PCWorld in Lancaster. If you want to see what they are like before buying they were on display there (but more expensive !!). As Gary says, they are extremely portable and also very easy to use.

Thanks John, I was thinking of having a look in there to see what was on offer. I will probably do as you suggest, have a look and decide which one there and then buy elsewhere.

I'm not a geeky but had a look at this issue 2 months ago when I was running out of space with my video files on laptop. Before you spend some money I'd check
1. Make sure that your PC will connect OK to an External drive; some older ones are limited, especially older laptops. My old laptop wouldn't.
2. An an alternative, which is what I did, is to expand your internal memory if your PC can take more. Has disadvantage of not doubling up as a separate back up location, but I added 250gb for about £40, and its all in 1 place.
3. For my photos, where I don't need to access old ones regularly, I simply back them up onto blank CD. On a 700mb CD I get up to 1000 pics (depends on your resolution and thus file size) and the cost of a cd is pence. So 10,000 pics go onto about 10 CDs for about £1.00! And for another £1.00 you can have secure off site back up. I also burn a second copy and keep these in a different building for security back up. Not as convenient but if you don't need regular access to them it works and gives you back up.

Good advice John and thanks for it. My PC should be OK, I have a couple of USB2 plus a Fireire connection spare.

I still have plenty of room room on my D Drive which I use to store my pictures but I want them stored elsewhere.

CD's or DVD's could be an answer but with almost 60000 images in 100's of folders a simple "copy everything" to wherever would be simpler I feel.

Regards,
Dave

This is what I bought - a shade more expensive than I remembered, but very good product. Just under £60 from Amazon.

A cheaper alternative is to get an internal HDD which is what I did. They are easy to fit - 1TB for £75:

Sean,
My PC as 2 x 160GB HDD's.....I currently have the OS and all progammes etc on the "C" drive and my pictures, videos etc on the "D" drive.
There is still plenty of room (approx 100GB) on the "D" drive it's just that I want to back them up away from the PC.

Okay Dave, I understand that but if you are not bothered about portability an internal HDD can still be 'seperate' from your PC. Another alternative is to use an 'internal' drive with a caddy to use it outside of the main PC, lots cheaper than buying an external:

You know 100GB space will never be enough.... ;)

Am i correct in saying that an external hard drive is more secure?

Alan - they can be if you use them to 'back up' your data files and don't have them connected to your main PC all the time, this way if you get a virus it may not effect the external drive. I lost all my data files several years ago and started making back up's of all my files onto CD's, but now that external drives are so cheap I've switched to using those, I'm still a wee bit paraniod about my main one getting lost or infected by a virus so I always keep a back-up of my back-up!!!!!! ::)

If you are simply backing up photos for instance then there is no difference.
