 Exteral Hard Drives....
« Thread Started on Jan 11, 2009, 2:03pm »

I have hust done a search for .jpg files in my D drive (PC as 2 HDD) where I keep all my pictures and was amazed to find that there are over 59,000.
I would like to copy these to an External hard Drive but have no experience of such.
Anybody use them and any recommendations?

Ta,

Dave

Dave - there's lot on the market, all very similar, the main difference is that some require external power supplies and others don't and derive their power from the host PC. You should be able to get a 500 GB one for around the £70-00 which would give you loads of storage space, larger or smaller ones will vary in price accordinally.

Myself I use a 120GB HP Media drive which I keep all my personal files on and I take verywhere I go so I've got access to them, it doesn't need an external power source and its plug and play with either XP or Vista, I've got about 20,000 photo's and files on it and have used just over 10% of its capacity. I also have another 500 GB HP drive permanently docked to my PC at home onto which I regularly back everything up in case the protable drive gets lost or corrupted!

hope this helps, I'm pretty sure others will be able to give you some advice as well.

Cheers Gary.....I'll have a look around and see what's on the market. Is it just a case of "drag & drop" to copy them over?

Yes they work like any other drive on your machine, the only difference is if you want to unplug them ,while the PC is on, is that you need to disconnect them like a USB memory stick so that you don't damage them.

Dave

I bought a Freecom 250gb external HD from Amazon earlier this year for £50. (after I had read about Gary's!). Really good and easy to transfer pics just like any memory stick. Is only 8 x 13 cm so very portable.

Try this link

This is a great thread!

A sad day today as i had throw my desktop PC into the skip.....damaged beyond repair by a virus :-[

As stated elsewhere i have removed my hard drive and i am running it (with external power supply) from my lap top for the time being (new PC ordered :) ).

Can i expand on the thread by asking if it is possible to attach an external hard drive to a wireless router (i use a Sky one) in someway so that you can access it from different machines (ie...a desktop PC and laptop)?

Alan - I don't think this is possible, you would need some sort of operating software on the drive to make it visible to the network/other machines?
