Does Nethermost Cove take the prize for the finest Lake District corrie, do you think? I'd forgotten just how good it is until I revisited yesterday. It would make a great campsite.

SueG and I did a horseshoe route past the cove yesterday - up the Nethermost ridge from Grisedale and then down Dollywagon to Ruthwaite Lodge. That descent is so steep that you feel you're going to end up on the Lodge roof!

It was very windy and we were reduced to hands and knees crawling at times on the way up. When we got back to the car (parked legally in the layby at Patterdale) we found a large branch had fallen off onto the road behind it. The whole car was covered in leaves and bits of twig but fortunately there seemed no actual damage - a fitting end to a spectacular day!

I've never actually made it to Hard Tarn. If I remember right AW said it was infested with mice (or was it voles). Whatever, perhaps Nethermost Cove is infested as well. If you were camping then they might sneak in and steal your breakfast.

Derek,

Lindsay has more than your route planned. I am doing Dollywaggon via The Tongue and L has it in mind that I do my challenge on the same day as yourself and we meet up somewhere on Nethermost. ???

Sorry Martin can't agree about Nethermost Cove as the finest Lake District corrie, there are just too many others that are better examples. But I do agree it is in a spectacular location and deserves to be visited by more walkers.

Quite true Frank!!

just sorting out dates now, I'll then be able to give an opinion regarding the corrie :)
