 Raven Crag access problems
« Thread Started on Feb 4, 2012, 2:19pm »

This was the scene that greeted us yesterday at the foot of the final ascent to Raven Crag.

The damage looks fairly recent, as the fallen trees looked quite fresh. The bottom end of the path was pretty much blocked by about 20 fallen conifers. I probably wouldn't have bothered, but Claire was with me needing the summit for Wainwright 206. We did get through but wasn't easy.

the sign didn't put you off then ;D

Well worth the tree scrambling for Claire to tick off another fell. Look forward to hearing of her completion :)

Look me up on www.artbyraybradshaw.com
I like to paint people enjoying the outdoors in and around the English Countryside. Mainly the Lakes and the Dales. More recently the urban scene is included. I would like to think that if AW was alive today, if he didn't appreciate my talent, he would at least get my humour.

I don't go there often Don - only my third time, and first since summer 2007.

Will be this summer on Hallin Fell, to enable the athletically challenged to attend.

I'm sure the sign meant well, and I don't want to appear facetious, not me ::), but now the trees have hit the ground I would have thought they were relatively safe ???

Update...

Signs at commencement still state 'Permissive Path Closed".

The nearby car park, however, has no such signs.

Ker-bleedin'-ching, United Utilities.

I was there last week and at the small parking 'layby' near the path, there were two notices. One said that the permissive path was open, the other said the path to Raven Crag was closed due to fallen trees. I found that somewhat confusing. I guess they mean the detour to Raven Crag is 'closed'. We went up the path to find one of the sketchbook locations, but trees have grown to almost obliterate the view.

We saw the same notice and came to the same conclusion, but it really isn't clear. Presume they haven't removed the fallen trees yet - didn't go up to have a look ::)

Has anyone any further update on the access situation at Raven Crag please?

Perhaps we should be writing a strongly worded letter to United Utilities. How long does it take to cut a few trees up.

Perhaps they have had few complaints, so aren't really bothered.

From what I've heard there have been more trees come down in this area recently making access along the permissive path very difficult and probably dangerous?
