Has anyone of you come across the terrible 'Helvellyn Cafe' yet? A lot of us locals are shocked that this is happening right now and are becoming to get worried that this might be a thing that could spread to other iconic fells such as 'Skiddaw,Scafell Pike,Great Gable,Catbells, etc'. Surely anyone who really loves the fells will not want to see Quad-Bikes tearing up and down the fells taking burgers, drinks, etc back and forth. And lets not mention the litter and disturbance to wildlife. Don't you think that this belongs more to Blackpool than to Helvellyn? As I've already stated, this could be a dangerous thing for us who like to enjoy the tranquility of the fells just as AW did! Please if you oppose this sort of thing in our county let your voice be heard now!!

Hi Dollywagon, Firstly welcome to the forum. This topic was brought up within the "In the News" thread last week. If you read some of the reports in the newspaper articles it seems that there is only a limited time of operation before they have to ask for planning permission (28 days I think). Personally I think that this is a "Flash in the pan" (one of my best puns I think ) and after a while their efforts will not be financially rewarding and the novelty will wane. They are not the first to have done such a thing and no doubt they will not be the last. Andy

Now in fairness come on lets give these people the chance to set up a legitimate business and make the necessary applications not only to the council for planning permission, but the Inland Revenue to declare a new business and to the Health and Safety Executive, and that the necessary liability insurances are all in place.
Oh heck all that might be an expense too far. What a shame, oh dear, well never mind eh? Me I'll stick to me butties and fruit.
Welcome to the forum Mr Dollywagon.
Frank.

Missed this on the "In the News" board last week due to being too busy at work (arriving home at 11 pm on both Monday and Tuesday due to firstly a meeting in London on Monday and training night shift staff on Tuesday).
I remember back in the 70's climbing Scafell Pike from Langdale (not the best of routes I hear you say) and on the way back down there was a chap selling cans of coke at 50p each (an ezhorbitant price at the time) and because it was so warm he was getting takers!
As Andy says, it has happened in the past and will do so in the future. If they're mad enough to sit up there all day cooking, good luck to them. I'd much prefer walking the ridges once I had reached the summit of Helvellyn than be doing that.
John

here's a thought. In some respects best of luck to those guys for giving the idea a go. One would imagine that during their travels to get up there and during their stay they would perhaps need to "answer the call of nature"? Now I dont recall seeing many toilet facilities up on Helvellyn but it sort of makes me wonder where they wash their hands before preparing those bacon butties? The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent, but the hills are eternal, always there will be the lonely ridge, the dancing beck, the silent forest, the exhilaration of the summits. These are for the seeking and those who seek and find while there is still time will be blessed both in mind & body. AW- Book 7 The Western Fells. |

Thanks for all the replies and concern. I just thought that it was a bit strange when I read about it in the Keswick Reminder and got the feeling that it was being praised! Especially when us locals living here have such difficulty with planning and building, and then to see such a relaxed attitute towards this cafe out on the fells!

Hi,
All my instincts tell me that this sort of thing, whilst fun to start with, needs to be avoided if it has any chance of catching on. However, AW recalls the tea hut at the end of Easedale Tarn in the 1950s and I must admit that, if it was still there, I would have bought a cold drink on the occ hot day after climbing up or, more often, a hot soup on the cold, wet days. So I suppose I'm some sort of fellside NIMBY but....; how about an OWINS (Only When I Need Something)

It would be interesting to know how the Easedale Tarn (and Skiddaw path?) refreshment huts were viewed in their day and how successful they were. Perhaps they belonged to an era when there weren't 'fellwalkers' (in any case, relatively few), but daring adventurers (Victorians on ponies?) venturing into the wilds.
My inclination is to oppose such 'enterprises' - I certainly would not like anything like there is on Snowdon (railway, half-way refreshment hut, summit complex) anywhere in the Lake District. I suspect the Helvellyn thing will fizzle out, but would not want it to become the thin end of a wedge. Now, a Costa Coffee on Mungrisdale Common might be a different matter.

Andy,
Thanks for that - a very interesting item (just what I was suggesting we might come up with).
So - the proprietor charged a premium for his drinks, the war put paid to it as a viable enterprise and vandalism led to its demise.

It's nothing new, we came across a couple of chaps selling bacon/sausage buns and tea/coffees on the summit of Skiddaw back in 2008. They seemed to be doing a roaring trade, nowt like the smell of freshly cooked bacon to get the taste buds watering! lol

There was also this item this year about a full three course meal on top of Skiddaw
http://www.cumberlandnews.co.uk/news/che....th =2.1825/news
The article also refers to
"The inspiration comes from William Wordsworth, who dined with his friends on top of Skiddaw to celebrate the English victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815"
Trust Wordsworth to have started it all!

However they were viewed they presumably didn't have to meet such touch health and safety requirements.
