Now Great Gable is a bit of a bugger in mist, but there are several cairned paths off it and at least 4 marked on the map.
I picked the most difficult one for my descent when it misty, by virtue of the fact it had the biggest cairns

At least they didn't walk aimlessly off the side and cause themselves more harm but I do wonder at the sense of some people; if your nav and sense of direction aren't up to snuff then don't go walking in mist.

It can be confusing without the mist, on GG. Not hard to find yourself on some nasty scree when trying to get down to Beck Head (happened to me not so long ago ). Happily, the last time I was up there (for the 2011 Challenge) I took extra care and checked map & compass + GPS and found the (steep) scrambly path.

I went down some crazy boulder gully when I was up there in mist last year, then on to some ankle-sucking scree to reach Beck Head. Interesting route to say the least and not one I plan to repeat.
