Yearly Attempt to Wild Camp :-)
« Thread Started on Jun 7, 2012, 11:42am »

Hi...

Well it's that time of year again for the 3rd year running I am going to TRY and camp out for a night or two, both previous attempts have ended in embarrassing failure so I still own a tent that has yet to see wild grass :-)

My question is this.... I am thinking of going to the Lakes tomorrow and then parking up around Dungeon Ghyll and then down the Cumbria Way and up onto Rossett Pike and do a few fells round there till I'm knackered and then camp. How do you go on for parking around Dungeon Ghyll, I am gone for 2 days can you pay for 2 days parking ???

Most of the parking up there is pay and display. If you are a Nat Trust member, that one would be your best bet - save a few quid too. Probably best to check if you can park overnight though.

Paul

Don't know about wild camping? The weather is wild here, though ... :(

The will be severe gales in the fells this weekend. I would wait for better weather, or it might be failure again :(

Hi Paul, I think you're very wise. As you've been trying to do this for some time you deserve to really enjoy it when you do and not just do it 'just to do it'. I would also have loved to have done it but never managed to do so and probably won't now (unless I have a volunteer to carry my tent, stove, comfy chair etc). Good luck when you re-arrange it.

(Like Derek in the Lakes, weather in Notts is grim; half way through having new lawn laid and my front garden is now just a mud slide ..... :'().

Hi Chap,

sorry to hear your wild camp had to be postponed - but it certainly wasn't the week or weekend for it! We've just returned from a short break in Wales and I'm now thanking god we weren't camping having seen the situation in Aberystwyth on the news this morning.

We managed a one nighter in the lakes a few weeks back when the weather was good and it was worth waiting for [image]

Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for another chance - there has got to be a longer spell of more settled conditions soon.

Take care
Wendi

Me and the lads have done 3 wild camps in the last 2 years, all in the lakes. We usually head for a tarn to pitch up and then go for a late walk before retiring to bed.

For our first one we stayed at Easedale tarn after summiting Tarn Crag, High Raise, Sergeant Man and Blea Rigg. The following day we summited Great & Little Castle How, Swinescar Pike, Lang How and Silver How. We parked in Grasmere and were fortunate enough to bump into the parking attendant who told us to buy 2 tickets and he would not give us a penalty notice.

The second one we stayed at Red Tarn after summiting Birkhouse Moor, we then pitched the tent and did Helvellyn and Catstye Cam, the following day we summited Sheffield Pike and Glenridding Dodd. This time we parked in the main car park in Glenridding, we went into the visitor centre and the nice lady in there sold us a 2 day ticket.

The last time we stayed at Sprinkling Tarn after summiting Rosthwaite Fell, Rosthwaite Cam, Dovenest Top, Combe Door Top, Glaramara, Looking Steads, Red Beck Top, High House Tarn Top and Allen Crags we then pitched our tent and summited Seathwaite Fell, that really was a tough day!! We parked on the roadside on the lane to Stonethwaite.

We absolutely love wild camping and the weather isn't always brilliant but hey when is it?

we intend to get 2 done this summer, dates and venues not decided yet!

Hi Chap,
When summer eventually arrives ??? and you have another go you could do what I did and leave your car at Baysbrown campsite. I forget what they charged me but it was only a pittance and I left my car up near the farm. You do though have a nice 2 mile walk up the valley as a warm up before you reach the fells.
Hope this helps,
Karl
