However robust the ecology of the Lakes may look it is, in fact, a delicately balanced ecology and any foreign objects will disturb that balance. Sure, the lesser fells are unlikely to attract 'mountains' of ash but the more popular peaks will and the ecology will be changed and probably accelerate erosion.

As to memorial plaques et al; the historic memorials are fine and have their place however, the fells are now so popular that without restrictions they could become overrun with inappropriate memorials and would unquestionably spoil the Lakeland experience.

I have no prob with folks ashes on the fells and even memorials, especially if they are pretty discreet. For lots and lots of us, the felltops are where we find true peace, happiness, calmness which just melts you, body and soul. What a fitting place to be at the end of your days methinks.

No prizes for guessing where you can come and have a chat to me after my days have ended. I NEED to get that third cairn rebuilt again up there for special reasons :) :)

You'll have to pick summat a bit lower if you want me to chat with thee lass!!
Seriously I don't have problems with ashes being scattered or even discreet memorials. There is far more damage being done to the Lakeland Fells by the many tens of thousands of pairs of boots than by a few bucketfulls of ash.
