 Another first timer...
« Thread Started on Jul 10, 2011, 6:29am »

A friend and I are planning the walk for next year to celebrate out 50th. We are looking to go with a company - so grateful for views on which c0mpany you either can recommend or perhaps would avoid if doing it again (minful of house rules, please!!) ;)

Once we have booked shall re-visit with a whole host of other questions.

A year to go to my 50th and I have just joined my first forum....not sure if my kids would be pleased or disgusted!!!

Welcome to the Forum and hope you enjoy all the news, banter and lack of pproffreediing generally.

I'm not a C2C completer myself but I know that we've had good reports about Coast to Coast Packhorse, and Simon, who runs it, has good associations with the Wain Soc, helping spread the word and combining with us on clarifying certain sections. He wrote a great article about his experiences with his C2C operation earlier this year in our Footsteps magazine (spring 2011 edition) which will soon be published on our website in pdf form.

Thanks, I had seen their site today. Mac Adventures (?) also have an impressive site - views anyone?

Hi,

We used Packhorse when we did the C2C in 2009 and B&Bs we stayed at said they were the best of the companies. We certainly found them excellent - they have the advantage that it is the only route they do.

On the other hand this year we used Macs Adventures for the West Highland Way and they were also very good.

On both trips we found that, on the whole, the B&B accommodation was better than the inns/hotels.

Just recently we spoke to a couple who had just done the C2C using a new company who will pick up your car from St. Bees and take it to Robin Hoods Bay - convenient, but they did say that when they asked about insurance for this they were told that they hadn't thought about that. Afraid I don't know what the company's name is.

Nick I just finished it with Macs and they were top drawer. I couldn't believe the high quality of the B&B's and guesthouses, not what I recall from when I was a lad. I did it with my 11 yr old son, so we took 16 days and that meant a hefty charge of just under £1k each. Standout accommodation included Gillercombe in Stonethwaite, Old Water View Patterdale, Barnhouse in Orton (truly superb), Willance House in Richmond and Broom House Egton Bridge. Even picking those out I fell almost guilty to ignore the many others who treated us like kings. Good luck next year, it's the best thing I've ever done and I hope my boy has as good memories as I do.
