Hi, looking to do the Western part of Route 5- Eastern Fells, from Stuart Marshall's book.
I need to know if anyone has any experience of the route from Little Hart Crag -contouring beneath Dove Crag- to Hartsop above How. Apart from the book, I can find no mention of this route anywhere. I am doing the reverse of the route as described in the book.
My issue: how tricky/dangerous is it? I need to factor in contingency if the weather turns.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark,
I did this route from Sykeside up to Little Hart Crag then along to Fairfleld and down St Sunday Crag, total whiteout in cloud/mist/fog all day!! There are fenceposts and a good path to follow but I was navagating by each contour line. The path on the OS Map is not the one to follow where it cuts the fenceline, I kept to the fence posts and you meet the path coming up from High Pike!! If it's a clear day you can pretty much see the route to follow, not tricky or dangerous until you drop onto Hartsop above How from Hart Crag, very rocky so "Watch where you put your feet" Have fun, I did the Fairfield Horseshoe last year, again in mist/fog/cloud and added wind & rain, fated never to see the view!! Paul.

From Hartsop-above How the drop down to Dovedale Beck is steep -no more so than The Nab. From there, a fence guides the way up to Black Brow, with an indistinct path, starting to the left of the fence, joining it around halfway up. Heavy going underfoot, even though it was comparatively dry.
