Am I correct in thinking that you just scan in a copy of the map that covers your walk and then mark the route with photoshop or similar program and then just add it to the folder of photographs for uploading ?

Thanks

Shortly after I joined the forum, I was upbraided for including an OS map in a post. There may be copyright issues, but I'm not sure what the rules are. If you have an OS licence to publish maps you would presumably be okay.

A lot of people include maps in posts, and they certainly help. Perhaps something we should seek a ruling on. No doubt Derek will have an answer for us in due course ;)

Thanks for that.
Have included a map with my most recent photos but will not do so again until we have further clarification about this.
The map shown is from memory maps but I do accept it is an OS Map.

Duncan

As I understand it, all OS maps are subject to Crown Copyright until 50 years after they were first produced. Before 1959, maps were not copyright, and, provided they have not been substantially revised, maps produced before 1959 are now out of copyright (but don't quote me, if you are sued!!)

Regarding putting maps on your website, the position is not very clear from the OS website. The relevant page is here: http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/licensing/index.html

What I suggest is that you contact Ordnance Survey direct at:

For general enquiries, complaints, feedback or suggestions, email: customerservices@ordnancesurvey.co.uk or call us on 08456 05 05 05

You will then have an answer from the horse's mouth. I imagine that you need a licence to display OS maps on your website.

As for as the Forum is concerned, I don't think that OS maps should be displayed directly in a post as it may well contravene copyright rules.

Any lawyers out there, please feel free to advise on this subject.

When I get home from holiday in a couple of days, I will ring Ordance Survey myself for advice.

Derek,
Thanks for that. Better to be on the safe side and not include any maps until you hear further.
At least the maps have not been used for financial gain and I think with copyright that once someone tells you not to do it again it normally does not go further than that. (unless of course you do, do it again !)

Interesting question ....

I have spent fortunes with Memory Map and paid extra to be able to print out the maps I produce. I would be stunned if OS had a problem with people posting images of routes they have done but having said that thats not a legal opinion :-)

I had just created a jpg of todays route I walked and was going to post that as well DRAT !!!

Just a thought on being sued by HM govt for posting a copy of one of their maps with a route shown for the guidance of others and for no personal profit?

What would the legal remedy be to HM govt and how would the amount of damages be assessed ( maybe there is someone on the forum employed by OS as a cartographer who can tell us how much the dept have successfully sued for in the past).

Just out of interest you know ;D I am not advocating you include a map even though this may help someone not to get lost and not have HM govt go to the expense of having one of their search and rescue helicopters come out to rescue you at no little expense (to say nothing of the cost to the MRT). Does that sound a little angry old man or the sort of response you would expect from Grumpy :D

We pay enough for the wretched maps in the first place. And for mountain walking not always the most accurate.

Just to be safe then if you are on the fells and a lost fell walker asks to look at your map because he says he is lost don't believe him as he may be a 'mole' from the OS checking to see if you are letting someone else see a OS map without payment. :D

I hereby declare that I have never copied a OS map for personal gain. ::)

Frank.

Agree with what you say.
The cost of memory maps which are OS maps can be copied on to your computer and downloaded on to your GPS but you appear to be in breach of copyright if you print them out (or display them on the web)
However you can access a number of satellites using a GPS to pinpoint your position and it costs nothing and you are not breaking any rules. The cost of sending up satellites and maintaining them must cost millions but we can use them for free so perhaps the OS should consider being more lenient with those who have purchased maps legitimately.

Duncan

You can print them out [for personal use], provided your printout isn't bigger than A4. [I get round that by sticking two legal A4s together, if necessary.

What is less clear is publishing on the web - no-one has yet been able to give me a clear answer on this. I may even contact OS and ask them.

There is a parallel with music etc. If you buy a CD and play it at home, in your car etc., you're fine. But play it to a larger audience - a local dance etc., and you need a Licence from The Performing Rights Society [with certain exceptions]. As with publishing OS maps for others benefit, this is a copyright issue.

Rob,
Quite an interesting question, from a legal point of view it could be argued you were aiding and abetting the person responsible for infringing copyright.

Must admit it would be helpful for the OS to be a bit more flexible and allow their maps to be shown on the internet.
It would also be interesting to know what the OS charges for people who publish books that contain copies of their maps.
The Society might be able to make history here by agreeing to pay a single fee to the OS for all members to use maps displayed on this site. (Just joking)

Ducan, the OS are much more flexible these days with their mapping, have you looked at their Get a Map service???

http://www.getamap.ordnancesurveyleisure.co.uk/

Or their OpenData application which is a lot more sophisticated

Gary, thanks had a look at that. It quotes the following on 'getamap '

' Share your customised maps with friends and family.'

It doesn't state that friends and family have to be signed up ! So what is the difference with us sharing with friends on the forum ???

I like to paint people enjoying the outdoors in and around the English Countryside. Mainly the Lakes and the Dales. More recently the urban scene is included. I would like to think that if AW was alive today, if he didn't appreciate my talent, he would at least get my humour.

Gary,
Got stuck on the first link with the following message
Unfortunately Microsoft Silverlight is not compatible with Linux operating systems at this time.
The second link was very helpful.

As you say the OS do seem to be more flexible these days, must admit I have never read anything in the press about taking action against an individual for using their maps but accept websites would have to be more careful about what they displayed.
