 Camera Lens Filters
« Thread Started on Feb 25, 2008, 4:31pm »

Dear All

Tomorrow I am due to take delivery of a new NIKON Digital SLR and I was after your opinions on what is the best sort of filter to put on the 18-55 lens.

The choice would appear to be 1) skylight 2) UV or 3) Polarising

All will protect the lens but which do you consider to be the best for the weather we tend to encounter in our beloved Lake District?

Many thanks in anticipation

Malcolm

I have only a pocket digital camera but on my SLR print and slide camera I have always used a UV filter in preference to anything else. I have found this gives good cloud and sky results and also protects the lens when you drop it (as I have done on occasions). It is cheaper to fork out a tenner for a new filter than £100 for a new lens. Must be the Yorkshire upbringing that makes me say that!

John
As Eric said at the AGM, a Yorkshireman is a Scotsman with his sense of generosity removed!
Having said that, this particular Lancastrian agrees with you that it makes perfect sense to fit a filter. In the past I have always used a Skylight filter but the blurb I have read recently says that a UV cuts down the haze, whilst I know that Sean McMahon has mentioned more than once about using a polarising filter as I think it makes the sky appear bluer.

Anymore thoughts anyone?

Malcolm, you will more than likely need all three as they serve different purposes ... for general use the UV one left on the camera will be fine, but I would also carry the skylight and polarising filters just in case ... the other thing to bear in mind the effect you will get on a digital camera using filters may not be pronouced as would be with a film camera as it depends type of sensor that is in the camera ... I was reading an article a few days ago that recommend that you didn't use any filters what soever and did all the image processing with Photoshop or similar ... and going by my new camera I would say that has some truth about it????

I invested in a polarizing filter a couple of weeks ago for my Fuji digital camera and I must say it does improve some shots, normally I just have skylight filter fitted mostly for lens protection. I personally would rather take the shot and then use it as is, photoshop for me is just for perhaps tweaking the image for contrast etc.
It would be interesting to get Derryb's or Sean's opinion on this subject ;) :D

Keep a UV filter on all the time for protection. You won't need a skylight filter, you can adjust the white balance to give a similar effect. A polarising filter will give increased saturation to blue skies and greens ...if the sun ever shines!

andy, Photoshop is well worth getting to know, I use the 'full' version at work but much prefer the new 'Elements' version, I reckon its the best £65 I've ever spent, its much more user friendly than the full version. After just a few goes its remarkable at some of the results I've managed to come up with, and there's one thing for sure i would never class myself at been very creative, but if you look at some of the graphics/photograph's on my web site, you can see how effective you can produce things.
