Hi all!
I`m a bit late to the party really as I`ve now decided to buy my first digital camera and I`m looking for a little help in choosing one as I know nothing about cameras.
I`ve probably got about £160 to spend on it and eventhough I`m reasonably technically minded I`d like one that was fairly easy to use. Also as it`s going to be carted up the summits of Lakeland I`d like it to be fairly light but robust.
I`d really appreciate any advice that you guys can offer me.
Cheers!
Paul
Thank you all in advance.

paul ... if you've never really used a digital camera before I would go for one of the simple to use point and shoot ones, anything around the 8 million pixel mark would be fine. There's several makes out there, myself i've always used Fuji, but the Canon's are good as well.

Have a look here Paul and decide what you need and don't need then take it from there. This is only one of many sites if you Google "Camera advice" you'll get loads http://www.cameras.co.uk/html/digital-cameras-world.cfm

Hi Paul,
Lou and I bought Canon PowerShot 2megapixel camera 5 years ago and it is still going strong - it is going to be replaced shortly but only because Lou has seen the far sharper images a 5/6/7 mp camera brings but we will still go for a Canon as this last one has been clipped to the front of my rucksack on all of our walks in rain, snow and occasional bursts of sunshine, been used abused by our kids, spent many a day on a hot sandy beach and has been dropped countless times and it still works perfectly!
Still only use it in point and shoot mode though!

PaulG, I like to keep things simple so went with a Canon IXUS750 for my first digi-camera. Very easy to learn to use and most Canon cameras get good reviews.

The IXUS 750 may be indeed the winner, Pete. It`s a little bit more than I wanted to spend for my first digi camera but may indeed be worth it.
I was initially lookuing at this one.

That camera was tested to destruction (yet they couldn`t kill it!) on The Gadget Show. They took it to Iceland and burried it in a volcano aswell as some more punishing tests and it still worked. They have a best price for it of £165 but I don`t know where that`s from as it seems to be over £200 everywhere.
Here`s the feature on it if anyone is interested.

Cheers for all of your input, lads!

I`m no David Bailey but I`ll have go!
Thanks for teh advice on the batteries, Gary. I`ll have to get a spare and I`ll have to invest in a decent memory card, although I know a good place to pick them up cheap.
The memory card that comes with the camera allows you to take and grand total of.......... 11 pictures!

Paul ... I find Amazon are just a cheap as anywhere for memory cards ... one thing to bear in mind check what is the max size of card that your camera caqn take ... some can't habdle the new breed of high capacity cards i.e. those sized at 4 Gig and over!

Yeah, eventhough I`ve never owned a digital camera I that exact issue with my mobile phone. I have a 2gb card but it`ll only function as a 1gb card so I figured it could maywell be the same with the camera.
I`ve just had a look at Amazon for a card and you`re right, they`re very reasonable indeed. I`ve bought stuff like that in the past from www.bigpockets.co.uk, they`re pretty cheap and the delivery is good.
