 Light the Lakes - Yoke
« Thread Started on Apr 29, 2012, 7:38pm »

Hi all

I turned out for the Light the Lakes event on the early hours of Saturday morning, lighting my lamp on Yoke together with 169 other lamps on Wainwright summits. Whilst short of the possible 214, this was a great event and I have to say as I saw about 7 other lamps come on at 0430 hrs I had a lump in my throat. I wasn't entirely sure of which fells I could see, but neighbouring Ill Bell and Red Screes were certaintys.

The weather was kind, although cold, I would say just below freezing, winds were slight and visibility good in parts, with little cloud.

I walked up in daylight and pitched a tent near to a rocky outcrop about 400m short of the summit of Yoke. I went to sleep setting my alarm for 0400hrs, then up to walk with headtorch to the summit.

Here are a few pics of the day, mainly on the descent to Troutbeck via Garburn Pass Rd and at Troutbeck Church.

A pretty poor picture just before sunrise at the cairn on Yoke.

This is taken from the rocky outcrop below a cairn on the approach to Yoke. The man in the photo is a chap called Ben who pitched his tent near to mine. He was a fine fellow, sharing his Italian red wine with me as we watched the sun go down on Friday night.

Taken on the descent. This shot is on the Garburn Road track, a lovely spot.

Still on the Garburn Road, this shot taken looking back toward Yoke and the Ill Bell Ridge. Caudale Moor, Thornthwaite Beacon and The Tongue also visible.

Yet another shot of the ridge, a favourite monochrome shot of mine.

Now back at the car at Troutbeck Bridge, I had a look around the Church, on what was developing into a lovely sunny day.

Nowt to do with mountains, but I liked this old door on the Church.

This shot was taken from the Kirkstone Pass Rd, showing Yoke to the right and Ill Bell to the left. I was on my way for a pint of bitter at the Inn.

As I said earlier the event was a great success, with 170 Wainwrights conquered with an estimated 500 participants. One poor lady was evacuated off the fell due to an ankle injury. Afterwards participants were invited to Ambleside Rigby Club, where speeches were made, food eaten and much ale consumed. The Wainright pump ran dry after a short while.

Thanks for posting your photos, Nige. Great to hear that another Society member was also out on the fells for this event.

The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent, but the hills are eternal, always there will be the lonely ridge, the dancing beck, the silent forest, the exhilaration of the summits. These are for the seeking and those who seek and find while there is still time will be blessed both in mind & body. AW- Book 7 The Western Fells.

Look me up on www.artbyraybradshaw.com
I like to paint people enjoying the outdoors in and around the English Countryside. Mainly the Lakes and the Dales. More recently the urban scene is included. I would like to think that if AW was alive today, if he didn't appreciate my talent, he would at least get my humour.

Good on you Nige. As Derek has said great to know there were other Society members participating in a very special event. From Latrigg we could see some lights over towards those fells but, like you, had difficulty in indentifying exactly which ones.

Well done, Nige. I bet Lesley is torn as to whether it was better to have gone with the rest of the members to Latrigg or if she should have camped with you on the FEF's!
