Hi Rob,

Yes very sad and it just goes to show how wet weather can make a Grade 1 scramble like Jack's Rake so dangerous. On Pavey you normally expect accidents to be on the rock climb routes.

I hope it doesn't put anyone off this really enjoyable way to the to of Pavey Ark.

Frank.

Very sad news indeed.

I have been on holiday in the Lakes this week and on Friday there was extremely heavy showers and thunder from midday onwards.

I was in Grasmere on Friday and saw the helicopter fly by.

The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent, but the hills are eternal, always there will be the lonely ridge, the dancing beck, the silent forest, the exhilaration of the summits. These are for the seeking and those who seek and find while there is still time will be blessed both in mind & body. AW- Book 7 The Western Fells.

Very sad and a timely reminder that even though the Lakeland fells don't match the mountain ranges of Europe for size they can still be dangerous no matter how much care and preparation you take and make.

Thoughts obviously go out to his family and friends.

Don,

My info is taken from the Langdale and Ambleside MRT website. What the report does not say is whether it was a fall down the rake or off the rake; not that the matters of course.

Neither do we know if the incident was preceded by a acute health problem - coronary, hypo, stroke etc.

Frank.

Sad news for all. Thoughts with family and friends plus for the walking colleagues at the time.

We were planning to have a go at Jacks Rake next month and this has to be honest put us off.

Looking at the rake on YouTube I am still puzzled at how things can go wrong. But rain and wind can obviously change things quickly.

Hi
I can understand being put off going up Jack's Rake. As mentioned on the other thread I attempted it 2 years ago, but hearing first hand from someone on the way up that they had witnessed a fatality there some years ago did not fill me with confidence.
When I got to the foot of Jack's Rake it was dark and overcast with no one around. I climbed the first section which involves some scrambling but having got up there you become aware of the huge drops. What really put me off was the prospect of the tricky pitch that comes after the exposed platform (Wainwright shows it as steep groove {awkward start}).
What made me feel a bit silly was the fact that on my descent having gone up by North Rake - a large party of young people were running up to Stickle Tarn. The majority then scarpered up Jack's Rake, and more amazingly several of the party, without ropes, went up Crescent Climb - a proper rock climb and very exposed.
One thing that does surprise me is that I have never heard of anyone climbing Jack's Rake wearing a helmet. I did even for my part climb on account of the possible risk of falling rocks/stones from climbers/sheep above.
Cheers
Richard
