Auction for AW Framed Caricature Picture
« Thread Started on Feb 6, 2012, 5:14pm »

This Framed and Mounted sketch is to be auctioned off at the Society AGM on the 31st March by the Society Chairman Eric Robson. The proceeds raised will go to Cumbria Wildlife Trust, this year's main beneficiary of the society fund raising in 2012.

For Society members not able to attend the AGM, who would like to bid for the AW sketch, an email auction has been organised. The arrangements are as follows:

1. Only members not attending the AGM should put in an email bid.
2. Only one bid per member.
3. Your bid, together with your Membership number and contact information (address, email etc.) should be sent direct to Ray Bradshaw at:
4. No email bids will be accepted after 6 p.m. on Thursday 29th March 2012.
5. The ‘live’ auction will be conducted at the AGM on Saturday 31st March 2012. Only the highest email bid will be entered into the ‘live’ auction.
6. The winning bid will be the higher of the email or ‘live’ bidding.
7. The name of the winning bidder will be made known at the AGM and may appear in an article in future Society publications and/or the Society website, unless specifically requested not to.
8. Please note: The reserve price for the AW sketch is £40.

If your emailed bid is fortunate enough to win the auction you will be contacted by a committee member to enquire where and how you would wish to receive the picture. If postage and packaging is required this would have to be at your expense.

Frame size: 15.75 x 12.75 inches
400 x 325 mm

I like to paint people enjoying the outdoors in and around the English Countryside. Mainly the Lakes and the Dales. More recently the urban scene is included. I would like to think that if AW was alive today, if he didn't appreciate my talent, he would at least get my humour.

Hi Ray,

How was that 'reserve' determined? Ridiculously low in my view.

This is for charity and I expect it will go for a lot more than the reserve.

At what point is the highest e mailed bid disclosed during the auction? Start, when live bids first exceed it, or when all live bids come to a close?

Frank.

Hi Frank, the reserve price was my suggestion and a one that was accepted by members of the committee. Maybe I should not have been the one to set a reserve I don't know . ??? I do know people who have expressed an interest in the sketch so I am sure it will be okay and raise a decent amount.

As for your other question I am not totally sure about at what point any email bids are disclosed. My thoughts are it should be at the beginning of an auction and bidding would begin from that point but I don't know the process. I will have to start watching these day time TV auction shows to get an idea. ::) ;) Seriously, maybe Derek and / or John Bewick would like to give an official answer to your question. I am sure Eric Robson will have done many of these things in the past so maybe he can advise normal auction process :)

Frank

The problem with setting a high reserve price is that you run the risk of not reaching it and, thus, no sale.

I don't think the reserve price will affect the eventual total.

Regarding Frank's second point:

I have discussed with John B and we think that the email bid should not be disclosed at the outset of the 'live' bidding.

This is on the grounds that nobody in the room knows what figure is in the minds of the other bidders. If the 'live' bidders know the highest email bid, they know they only have to bid £1 more to defeat the highest email bid. This seems unfair to the email bidder, who would probably think it was not worth putting in a bid since they would not be able to come back with a higher bid.

The highest email bid should not be declared until that bid has been beaten, and probably at the end of the auction.

The first email bid has been received. No worries with regards to the reserve. That's all I am saying . :-X

Belatedly ...

Eric Robson auctioned Ray's sketch at the AGM. The winning bid was £170!
