lol, now thats being prepared.

Totally agree though that its much better to be safe than sorry. Some of the idiots we see up on the fells in trainers and jeans are just asking for trouble if the weather changes, or they get lost etc. There should be some sort of regulations on kit you should have to take with you. Not sure how it would be enforced though, but would probably save the mountain rescue some trips out to rescue people.

Well, what we need is a Risk Assessemnt done weeks before you intend going out which you would submit to the Authorised Body. This would have to include a list of equipment and also a photo of the kit/equipment (you would be wearing it as well). Yuo would not be able to go out until you had written approval. On the day you would have to submit another set of photos for checking against your RA. If you need to call out the MRT, you would need to submit photos, identifier number to all be checked before the MRT came out. If not satisfactory, the MRT would not come out ...or you would have to sign a credit card chit or whatever before the MRT would take you down.
Any improvements?

yeah not an easy one.

Maybe we just need to get more people educated on the dangers/risks etc.

Sensible

We pack the same load into our pack regardless of the day this way we have gotten used to the same weight on every trip.
waterproofs,light fleece,sandwiches,hot cross bun,coffee,water,first aid kit,baseball type hat, fleece hat,spare battery for camera,spare laces, whistle,survival blanket,compass and last but not least two peddle bin liners in case we have to do any fording of over boot top water.
total weight 13lb. Can be slightly heavier dependant on sandwich content.

I Guess it is possible to have too much kit but I would rather too much than too little.
I Have often been walking off track and it would have been easy to get a twisted ankle or worse and have to remain for hours where you are before being found (Mobiles are often out of range in many parts of the lakes)
So I would rather have the reassurance of too much kit than too little and ask myself could I last a full night in the lakes with the kit I have following a minor accident if the weather was very poor.
In Summer I tend to carry less kit but more drinks.

I am always amazed at how unprepared some people are. We also met a couple of youngish lads on Scafell Pike in trainers and t-shirts (it was April but there was a lot of snow underfoot). We had all our kit on and my two young boys looked at these lads in amazement - asking as soon as they were out of earshot - are they lost or mad? I have always told my sons that you should never walk in the hills without a compass, spare clothing, whistle etc etc - when you look at reports from mountain rescue so many of the call-outs are because people are unprepared. My boys have been walking in the Lakes since the youngest was 5 and they have always carried their own rucksack (which has grown with them!) full of kit!

I always like to think I've got enough gear with me. One thing that worries me is that if the wheel did come off and I needed help, I wouldn't want a b******ing from the MRT. I would rather be described as a walker who got into trouble rather than some idiot who shouldn't have been out there.

Last time i saw one of them Lindsay was in a lay-by near farlton fell and there was a couple of dodgy looking blokes hanging around it with what looked like to me a snarling ball of fur and loads of walking trouser's from tk max in the back
