Here is a rather late report on our continuation of the Pennine Journey....from our 4 day walk in late April. Thank you to Roy Male for the useful information he put on the Forum which will help us plan for our next sections to Hadrian's Wall and beyond.

The first two days walking were wet with rivers in spate and the last two days were sunny and dry.

A friend of ours called Chas who is a folk singer (not of Chas & Dave fame) has written a song about how wet we were when we got to Tan Hill. If he will copyright the words to me I will post it on the forum!

We aren't walking exactly by the excellent guidebook edited by David Pitt in that whilst we are keeping to the route we are deciding our own day length sections.

Day 4

After driving from Pickering we parked Geoff's car up (Yvonne and Jennie styed overnight in Askrigg) and we walked from Bainbridge (after a late start) to Keld, where we stayed at the excellent Butt House.

Day 5

We walked from Keld to Bowes via Tan Hill from where we needed to use the wet weather route suggested in the book. Prior to that on the way up to Tan Hill we had to leave the Pennine Way at Lad Gill which was impassable as the picture below shows. We stayed at The Ancient Unicorn Inn in Bowes. Good food, but very poor accommodation, however there was nowhere else to stay.

Lad Gill between Keld and Tan Hill was blocked by a swollen beck

We went down to the road to cross Lad Gill via this bridge and walked the rest of the way to Tan Hill by road and not the Pennine Way.

We spent two hours at Tan Hill drying out. They made us welcome. The Ciabatta sandwiches are much nicer than the lasagne was! Not recommended, the lasagne that is.

You can see the amount of water in the River Greta near Bowes

To get off the same bridge we had to climb the fence. The gate was awash.

Day 6 was Bowes to Middleton in Teesdale. I've never walked in that area before. Lovely sunny weather. We stayed that night at the Teesdale Hotel which ws excellent in all respects.

A much more pleasant day. We made the detour over Goldsborough Hill to find a pleasant lunch spot in a hollow.

Day 7 (Half day walk) We walked from Middleton to High Force, the first time I've ever been there. There was plenty of water coming over the fall from previous days, yet it wasn't raining that day. Perfect!

The traditionally styled but very nice Teesdale Hotel in Middleton -recommended

My first visit to High Force

We walked back to the High Force Hotel for lunch and then used Hodgsons's Taxis from Barnard Castle to return us and our luggage back to Bainbridge.

We are continuing up to Hadrian's Wall in early October and have pledged to finish up back in Settle sometime in 2013.

Best wishes to all Pennine Journey Supporters!

Phil, Very interesting to read your report and to see the photos. Your weather seems in marked contrast to what I experienced in May with unusually strong sun giving me problems. We will no doubt have further discussions concerning the next stages for both of us.

Phil,
Good to read of your progress so far. As for stage distances Heather and I would not walk those distances now!
For inspiration (I think!) read the reports on the website by Dave Metcalfe and Richard Hulme

Phil

Looked to be some "interesting" walking there, particularly with the swollen streams and becks. Hope you and Judy (and the team) have now managed to dry out!

Hi Phil
Amazing photos from Teesdale. (wish they came with sound :-)
Re your Pennine Journey; With accommodation / eateries being fairly limited in Horton-in-Ribblesdale, have you or any of your fellow walkers stayed, or eaten at the Crown Inn Hotel? If so, what was it like? Are the pubs in Horton walker-friendly?

Wandering Dutchman

Hi There

No, we didn't stay in Horton so can't comment on Crown. We used the Craven Heffer on the Cracoe Road out of Skipton for two nights, see earlier posting. Good value, good pub food and friendly owners.

This was what we did:

Five people in two cars:

Day One: Parked at Settle. Walked to Horton. Returned by train to Settle. Drove to Caven Heffer near Skipton.

Day Two: Drove to Skipton, parked up. Train to Horton. Walked to Buckden. Caught bus back to Craven Heffer. Driver continued on bus to collect his car from Skipton Station. Returned to Craven Heffer.

Day Three: Drove one car to Bainbridge. Parked it there all day. Drove other car back to Buckden parked that all day. Walked from Buckden to Bainbridge. Drove Bainbridge car back to Buckden. Came home.

A bit of a faff but we did it. Its much further to drive from Buckden to Bainbridge than to walk it!

John B:

Sorry John - can't join you on Sat 23rd. We have booked the Ryedale Ramblers Group Coach Ramble to Swaledale on the Sunday 24th, can't do two days on the trot in the Dales (saving up for next stage of PJ in October!)

Have just sent the form in to the other John B for the meals for the 10th birthday bash in November. I hold you personally responsible for my involvement with the Wainwright Society after your presentation at the Ilkley Literary Festival in 2009.

Best wishes

Phil

(PS I'm sure I spelt Heffer wrong - I think maybe Heifer is correct!)
