Dear friends

Myself, my wife Judy and Geoff Fielding (Society Members) and a few others we hope, from Ryedale Walking Group, intend walking the Pennine Journey from Settle to Bainbridge over three days on Sat-Sun-Mon August 20th/21st/22nd.

By using a combination of car sharing, buses and the Settle-Carlisle Railway the route is doable by staying overnight for two nights at the same place. We intend staying for two nights (Sat/Sun) at The Craven Heifer on the B6265 Grassington road just outside Skipton where rooms are available: http://www.cravenheifer.co.uk/index.cfm

Unfortunately this weekend clashes with the Society Walk up to Darwen Tower which we had hoped to do but this clash is unavoidable as I needed to fit this weekend into our walking groups programme.

If any Society Member would like to come please contact me via a personal message for further details.

Best wishes

Phil,

Hope the sun shines and you enjoy this first instalment.

I should be most grateful if you would let me know whether you have any route finding problems as we are about, hopefully, to get agreement soon for the route to be waymarked. Signage will be minimal particularly in non-rural areas so it is important that we can, over time, identify problem points on the route for special attention.

Will do David - I'll remember to take my notebook. Good luck with the waymarking effort - no doubt there is lots of red tape to overcome....

Cheers

Hi Lindsay

Certainly will - we will be eating two meals at the Craven Heifer so I can guarantee that we will try the Heifer pie!

Thank's for the information.

Phil,
I hope the weather plays fair for your three day adventure and look forward to reading the report.

On a side line, does anyone have any idea of the numbers of any completers of the Pennine Journey to date?

Hello Andy

Good to hear from you. The Pennine Journey website shows only nine people have completed it, including AW, but I do know that Society member Roy Male is walking from Settle to Hexham this week. He was planning to start on July 6th and complete 8 days to Hexham.

We have a couple more from our walking group doing the first day Settle to Horton with us, but there seems little interest so far in signing up for the three days.

Best wishes

We now have five people booked to complete the first 30 miles of The Pennine Journey from Settle to Bainbridge over the long weekend of August 20/21/22nd. I know there is still a limited amount of accommodation still available at The Craven Heifer is anyone else wishes to join us.

I was in Buckden last week and was surprised to see that The Buck Inn has been closed down since July 2010 - another victim of the changes taking place in the licensing trade with such a lot of pubs closing down.

Best wishes

Five of us are continuing our Pennine Journey this year, continuing where we left off at Bainbridge last August. That is me, Judy Geoff Fielding and our friends Jenny and Yvonne, who we hope will consider joining the Society this year. We aspire to reach the wall in 2012 and do the return in 2013!

We will resume our PJ from Bainbridge on April 25th and are using the services of Sherpa Van to carry our bags. We will park Geoff's car at Bainbridge and then set off:
25th Bainbridge to Butt House Keld
26th Keld to Ancient Unicorn Bowes
27th Bowes to Teesdale Hotel, Middleton in Teesdale
28th Middleton to High Force then catch a taxi/people carrier back to Bainbridge and then home to North Yorkshire/Malvern.

I decided that as the leg from Middleton to Westgate is too long for a first day including travelling, that when we resume we would segment it into a short day walking up to High Force for our lunch and then get the taxi people carrier to pick us up from there at about 2.00pm. Hodgson's Taxi's of Barnard Castle have quoted me £100 to return us to Bainbridge, picking up bags in Middleton, so at £20 each that is not so bad.

Happy New Year to all readers,

Phil

I'm sure Gary or Andy would do it cheaper if you ask them!!

Maybe so John - if Gary or Andy had a big enough vehicle that is...five of us with rucksacks and holdalls as well, three of the party are ladies...so will likely be carrying more than you or I would....
Geoff's car in which we are travelling over to Bainbridge in is a Subaru estate but it does have a large top-box the roof for the bags.

What say guys?

Hi Phil, Best of luck with your plans for later this year. As you know, I managed to get to Hexham in July and must now decide how much further I can walk this year. Keep posting !

Five of us (Three Wainwright Society Members - we are working on the other two!) will continue on our Pennine Journey later this month. We will resume from Bainbridge where we finished off last August. We aren't working exactly to David Pitt's book day by day but we are keeping with the route as depicted. This is our next 4 day itinerary:

Weds 26 April: Bainbridge to Keld (Staying at Butt House) 12.5 miles

Thurs 27 April: Keld to Bowes (lunch at Tan Hill) (Staying at Ancient Unicorn) 12.7 miles

Fri 28 April: Bowes to Middleton (Staying at Teesdale Hotel) 12.2 miles

Sat 29 April: Middleton to High Force Waterfall then lunch at High Force Hotel (6.5m)

Return via shared Hodgson's Taxi (Depot is in Barnard Castle) back to Bainbridge. Return home to Pickering/York/Malvern.

We are using the services of Sherpa Van to shift our bags - they charge £8 per bag on this route. Maximum weight per bag 20 Kgs.

Can't wait to get started again!

Best wishes

Phil, Hope all goes well for you all later this month. I think I mentioned to you at the AGM that I am walking my own next stage next month from Hexham to Appleby. I look forward to seeing your report in due course and know that Heather and David Pitt will also be very interested to know how you get on.

Thank's Roy. It was good to meet you at the Staveley AGM and chat about the Pennine Journey. I would have liked to stay for the seperate meeting but we had had to get back having been away from home since the previous Tuesday.
Nothing further to report at present, except my wife Judy is considering taking a lighter pair of boots to use especially for the long road section from Askrigg up to Gunnerside! She has a repaired achilles tendon and thinks they may be more confortable as they have a more flexible sole than her Altbergs have!

All the best for July - I hope we can manage another section later this year.

Phil
