 Done it!
« Thread Started on Apr 9, 2012, 10:12am »

Have just returned from two weeks in the Lake District and managed to "finish off" the Wainwrights. Having booked the first week's accommodation in hope I was blessed with a glorious week weatherwise and managed to "knock off" Red Pike (Wasdale), Hard Knott, Burnbank, Blake Fell, Gavel Fell (3 together), Great Cockup, Meal Fell (2 together) and Bonscale Pike, Loadpot Hill and Wether Hill (3 together).

The second week I was staying in Troutbeck with part of my family and on the Monday (before the snow came!) my daughter and I climbed Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick before finishing off with Troutbeck Tongue.

It feels good to have finished them but I must say I am thankful to have done it as I am finding going uphill increasingly hard!! Also, living in Surrey, you can't just "pop up" and climb a few more mountains!

Well done. There ought to be a special badge for people like you who travel the length of the country to get their ticks. I live on the doorstep, as it were, and it still took me ages to finish.

Best wishes, MartinJ

Well done, Sylvia, a great achievement, especially considering the distance you've had to travel to get to Lakeland.

I know that feeling. Living in Yorkshire I can pop up to the Lakes, but my position's similar to your's when it comes to the Munros.

Well done, Sylvia. My wife and I completed the 214 when living in London (it took over 40 years), so we can appreciate the difficulties of living 'down south'.

Good stuff Sylvia!!

A great achievement!! I only have about half your journey, living in Warwickshire, and can nip up for a day walk if I don't mind about three and a half hours driving at each end of the day ;D. I often wonder though, with the price of fual, how much it averages out at to climb all 214 money wise.

all the very best,

Lindsay

The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent, but the hills are eternal, always there will be the lonely ridge, the dancing beck, the silent forest, the exhilaration of the summits. These are for the seeking and those who seek and find while there is still time will be blessed both in mind & body. AW- Book 7 The Western Fells.

I can only imagine how much of pain trying to complete the Wainwrights from down south. I've only managed 40 in 11 months and I live right next to them.

I guess I am going to have similar problems with many of the Munros when I get round to them though.

Many thanks to all those people who have sent congratulations - much appreciated.

It has taken me since 1989 to do all the Wainwrights with one to three trips a year from Surrey (I won't miss that drive up the motorways!). Very dependant on the weather has to how many I got done. It does feel fantastic to have "ticked" them all off.

I now need to concentrate on something down South that doesn't involve so much driving and therefore fuel.
